Some Trivia about Solar Power for
Homes
During old times, the
idea of solar power for homes was limited only to
the use of the sun’s heat. Even before electricity was
even discovered, ancient civilizations have made use of
this heat for lighting and heating their homes especially
during the cold, winter nights.
As days and years passed, more and more uses
for the sun were discovered and better and more efficient
methods of harnessing it were realized. Now, solar power for
homes has become a good and preferable idea for people who are
aware of its benefits.
Solar power for homes is not
possible if not for the invention of the solar or photovoltaic
cell. It involves the application of the principle of
photovoltaics to convert sunlight into electricity.
It was first made by Charles Fritts using
selenium during the 1880s. However, its efficiency of below 1 %
has made it not ideal for use in commercial purposes. This led
to the development of the silicon type of solar cell by Russel
Ohl in 1941 which become the basis for all types of solar cells
that are used today.
These cells were used in a wide variety of
electronic devices. It can be found in most calculators, some
cell phones and laptops, even watches and cameras. Also it was
found to be a good source of back up power for orbiting
satellites and space stations.
Today, aside from solar cells, the ongoing
research and development on how to provide solar power for
homes have devised other methods of harnessing the sun’s power.
Solar updraft towers or solar chimneys utilize the method of
using the sun’s rays to heat the air which is then converted by
a turbine into electricity.
There are solar ponds which are actually
salt water pools that can trap solar energy and thermoelectric
or thermovoltaic devices which converts solar heat into
electricity. These other methods are constantly being developed
so that they can efficiently provide more solar power for
homes.
The application of solar power for homes is
an idea that is to be encouraged today. This is because
the use of fossil fuels in the generation of power has been the
cause of much concern lately.
The dwindling supply of these fossil fuels
has increased the cost of power generation that it has made it
hard for many people to afford electricity. Also the use of
these fossil fuels has led to the various environmental
problems like pollution and global warming. With solar
power for homes, all of these issues can be easily
resolved once and for all.
